How Do You Communicate?

COMMUNICATION – is the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium – “television is an effective means of communication”

Any task or transaction that requires more than one person can only be successfully completed with communication – such as telephone lines or computers.

There are three basic types of communication: verbal, non-verbal, and written

Verbal or oral communication uses the spoken words to communicate a message. Most people think verbal communication is all about talking/speaking, but listening is an equally important skill for this type of communication to be successful.

Non-verbal communication includes body language, gestures, facial expressions, and can even be your posture.

Written communication is essential for communicating complicated information, such as statistics or other data that probably could not be easily communicated through speech alone. Written communication also allows information to be recorded so that it can be referred to at a later date.

mind map

One of my favourites – Mind mapping is a great way to communicate – this brainstorming method allows individuals to identify a range of ideas quickly in a free form manner. An alternative is word listing where you make 3 columns with the following headings concept, words associated with your concept and opposite words – I am sure you get the gist!

Here are a couple of great quotes:

“It’s not all about content. It’s all about stories. It’s not all about stories. It’s all about great stories.” – Mitch Joel

“Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow.” – Lawrence Clark Powell

By improving your verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills, you can become more successful in all areas of your life.
